Hungry Ghost Festival (Zhongyuan Jie) in Singapore

What it marks

The Hungry Ghost Festival runs through the 7th lunar month, when the gates of the underworld are believed to open. The 15th day is the peak. Families burn joss paper and offerings, and getai (live stage) shows are held across the island. It is not a public holiday.

What's open and how it's marked

A normal working month. Getai stages and roadside offerings appear across HDB estates; by custom, some avoid moving house, weddings or swimming at night during the month.
